Meta Body

The virtual experience of the body is not exactly an experience of the flesh. These sensations, albeit having a physical censorial aspect, continue to be experienced in our bodies behind the screen, not in our avatar body. The virtual body is a metaphorical body, all language, therefore open to experimentation and possibility.

3D CG packages Vs Machinima

Software to develop 3D content are huge and complex, expensive and difficult to learn. CG artists spend years training to become proficient in modelling, animation and effects, not to mention other attributes that an animator has to learn and know how to use well. What if there was a shortcut to an artist over the complex, and work on something simple and accessible? This is where the pre Machinima and animation made by many programs offers (like Iclone, Moviestorm, Muvizu, xtranormal, etc). more info here.

Today the variety of software engines is as large as the indecision that some may have to choose the right program, which includes the ideal or the results to be achieved. Although now a large on-line gaming community, has the potential to become the next big thing for artists and content creators Computer graphics. It is easily accessible, does not requires or requires very little capital to start, and gets better and better every year, only depends on the director to "discover" all the little tricks. On some pro CG you need to buy a thousand dollars applications to spend hundreds of hours to render animations ever becomes obsolete for the amateur artist and thus can achieve similar quality productions done in time by a tenth of a hundredth of the budget. Been able to justify this popularity into a whole that the Machinima (Home-made) amateur on the rise, generating millions and millions of dollars to its massive video hosting services such as Youtube, dailymotion or vimeo.

The Machinima itself as an art form is very young. Since the animation is much older, more consistent, more difficult to elaborate, final work must look high end quality, not closer but rather perfect. The first machinima film, which is a film made in a game engine, was launched in 1996 in Quake. Improvements in engines and video game cards, editing, etc., have allowed gaming more realistic for the future. Ironically the 3D packages have grown in complexity over this time, but the games, some frozen in time, it shows for example in the lack of development of alternatives to customize the animations, ie. Despite some "setbacks" Animation made at home by an amateur, working with an engine more sophisticated, more realistic graphics (provided by this easy going animation programs and/or online games) and animation more fluid. All this combined with massive delivery of video (perhaps thousands of millions of users). All these developments combined point to one thing: the future of cinema is the virtual cinema and not exclusively on the WEB. It's predictable that this content will be available by your television through new House media.

Of course the machinima will never replace packages such as 3ds max or Maya (considered the best 3D animation programs, but requires a high knowledge). These tools were developed to offer professionals a high degree of control and integration with production lines for film and TV (of course we are very far away from see a Disney production made in Second Life). The aspiring filmmaker, machinima creator of homemade and amateur, don't need to offer these packages, this quality can not be interested in learning the intricacies of the film industry, unless your job depended on it, this is a factor that each one must judge on its own (but do machinima animation requires some minimal knowledge of the principles of a production / output). The Machinima eventually fill the gap between idea and execution, cinema in real time, and is a facilitator of entry for these new filmmakers. But we must be aware about what is Machinima/Animation is leading us. In Machinima case we are suffering a too high delivery of content, so high that the essence is distorted, example; (in my opinion) machinima.com delivers a high number of real time machinima by day, no offence, tons of real time videos published very day. So massive that becomes impossible to follow or watch it all. So much videos dedicated to tip and tricks, funny moments by it games popularity, like GTA, Modern Warfare 3, worlds of war craft, etc. Machinima.com has become as huge as a company and it works as a company with partnership google add, and much less is required. The animation Market, cinema, has increased, it's not new and the content not so much attractive, but just in some cases.

The machinima art idea is to use game engines as platforms for film, voice work, sound, environment, image processing, fx's, just as modern cinema uses actors, support staff, games, props, lights and post- production. The filmmaker can run from anywhere in the world and recording any viewer of an effective performance becomes a camera and edit your script or idea. Rendering is taken for granted in machinima, but CG is traditionally the number one concern when it comes to producing high quality work. Simply put, the weaknesses of an artist are in a machinima irrelevant since there is a "safety net" that can greatly increase the skills otherwise deficient.

To get into machinima, all you need is a real-time 3D engine. Doesn't necessarily have to be a game engine, but these are generally best suited for film-making. This is a relatively light load, compared to the thousands of dollars needed to organize even a film production. Although performances can be recorded using basic methods machinima, they are often as daily production of a film: rough and missing key elements. This is where a large part of the film comes with post-production including editing, composition, scoring, rating, and creative use of post-production effects and allows the combination of two different sets of images together seamlessly , a practice that hasn't become popular in the world machinima, but this is well understood in the rest of the movie industry. The production of machinima don't need to be limited to short films. Can be adapted to a music video, a documentary, treatment, or even a part of a traditional production pipeline. The biggest barrier to adoption of machinima as a legitimate vehicle for content creation has been a lack of awareness and lack of an ecosystem. The art of machinima is still young, but computer graphics and animation technology is raising the bar each year, providing a better starting point and better for the filmmakers who lack resources to carry out their ideas. There is great potential, both in marketing the idea of 3D cinema in real time and leverage current offerings in the game and CG technology to create more engaging and sophisticated art.

In this day and age we are already witnessing the exponential growth of the arts in Machinima and Animation, are in many events around the globe, whether through new technologies with the mass of the video hosted on the Internet. This past year (2011), was huge, the list would be huge if it were to mention all the new job, new concept, new artists in the scene and so on. Not only animated film but also Machinima content associated with the hugeness of the market, by it nature.

Some of the most acclaimed this past year is without a doubt (animation) made by Peter Pythagasaurus PeakeCast: Bill Bailey, Martin and Simon Greenall and Trenaman | (Machinima) The Trashmaster (nouvelle version) Murakawa done in GTAIV. Another big jump that gave machinima, machinima film was the documentary login2life of course made by some other acclaimed artists such by a new artist with the first working note 100 Trashmaster by the public | Clear Skies the Movie perfect animations(mocap camera) and story. And what will future bring to us :)

A year 2012 with many new aspirations, new features and new developments. The machinima animation and in essence may have many differences, but go hand in hand, in this mad rush for market and recognition, but the course machinima neck will not surely beat the animated film, never.

UWA Machinima Challenge (the art of the artists) big winner Tutsy Navarantha

For the 4th Edition the UWA has announced this event final Judge in Machinima event. To remind that the Machinima challenge has as always the mention of the 3D artists included in the 3d challenge. Another year and another great event in the area. The University of western Australia by the 4th edition, organized a huge event with a score even more overwhelming. The art of artists who from the beginning included the work done by other residents. As always, the request or we will call it slogan was "make a work of breathtaking" in fact there wasn't any of the works presented that had made me breathless, even those who did not get the prize. (So much as Freewee "official curator of UWA_INSL", mentioned on her video, no matter you win or not the prize, that doesn't mean your work isn't good).

But what makes the University of Western Australia in Second Life? Well in advance to UWA has been one of the most important promoters of art in SL and not only! They organize competitions with some frequency, "using" art made by residents, to promote their works and to give Second life ART more VALUE, these piece of art can pass through objects carved or compositions, which are included in a permanent exhibition inworld. Based on these works, the challenge is that the UWA launches the development of an audio visual work based on the works displayed in the excellent work that culminates today presented live, so that is how Machinima appears on the challenge. This year the UWA had a list of 84 submitted papers of which the jury had a hard task of choosing the four winners (in this case 5 due to a double victory).

Since I am a curator as well on yourmachinima community and followed very close the submission panel, I had made my list of favourites. Funny it is to mention that the final results matches perfectly in my picks. So here are the winners list and my personal review.

MachinimUWA IV: 1st Prize (L$60,000) – 63 Points. WELCOME TO THE OTHER SIDE by Tutsy Navarathna

Tusty surprised the medium and made the perfect connection between the real and virtual, as we (the residents intrinsically intertwined) composition as a whole is sublime and full of meaning. Tutsy can show that few Machinimators this platform achieved a harmony between coexistence. Tutsy has achieved the bridge between the real and the virtual"or unreal", isn't that great?!. This is a well deserved prize, for a creative mind.

MachinimUWA IV: 2nd Prize (L$40,000) – 47 Points. ARTWASHERS by FRIDAY SIAMENDES of California

A documentary-style sequence of absurdities perpetrated on or near virtual-space artworks. The gags depend on sound - good earphones or speakers make a big difference. Artwashers a complex idea? Fun? That leads us to think unconsciously in art? No doubt a beautiful piece that surprised by the very idea of the Author (2senseproductions) plus one of our great machinima makers into action. Simple lines mood all in shades of direct documentary. Perhaps the irony of art curators, artists and the public, as every one sees a work of art? :) Just seen it, it becomes difficult to explain. Another very interesting view provided by FRIDAY SIAMENDES presented in a breathtaking production.

MachinimUWA IV: 3rd Prize (L$30,000) – 42 Points. ART OF THE ARTISTS by Fuschia Nightfire of Dorset, England

With a loud and very curious show, Fuschia Nightfire, makes us a show of drawings and digital forms of real life. In a composition that can only draw sweeping. Accompanied by the music featuring Obisdia CoMa (another excellent artists in Second Life, for music). A combination of leave any open mouth and a very well done!! Hats off

MACHINIMUWA IV: JOINT 4th Prize (@L$22,500) – 35 Points. QUBIT: COGNITIVE DISTORTION by spyVspy of Lisbon, Portugal:

This work I talk in first person lol (it's my work after all). My special thanks to the artists involved and a very special to Maya Paris, also included on my work, so far viral acception from the public, and that for me it is all. Based entirely on the size of our perception, not only individualistic dimension, since the Qubit (The smallest unit of information in a computer designed to manipulate or store information through effects, predicted by the quantum physics) Represented by the "LittleBigPlanet" character dimentions, and the character of the individual and the Dimension of our real knowledge of the vastiness of the whole universe (it's like talking ironically about the tiniest of the tiniest thing, thinking about the hugeness), the common desire of Human beying, reach of the untouchable. Not wanting to get out of our sphere entirely, although I plan to put into (out of the box) to compose this poem. Through the art of the artists I've tried a notion to explain the ideas in fluid way. Like affirmation of the universe seen by the human mind in poetic tone "Draw from the graphite, Brilliant and dazzling" (to our knowledge about the chain of carbon-based life and our universe that designed graphite, bright and shiny). This work was assembled in it's a whole. (Qubit and the Cognitive distortion)

MACHINIMUWA IV: JOINT 4th Prize (@L$22,500) – 35 Points. VIRTUAL LOVE by Iono Allen, from the land of Amore, France:

Iono bring us the Love, and what a wonderful way to talk about it, even in virtual love. As he mention "new great and highly expressive animations." about the SL animated prims. The question is "Where virtual love can bring you...?" this I will leave for each of you to answer. I just leave you this magnificent.

Warm congrats to all!! To more information about the UWA follow this link here you have the entire collection of submitted works to this event.
